What Is bps?

bps means bits per second — a basic unit used to describe data transfer rate.

Bits per second explained

bps stands for bits per second. A bit is the smallest common unit of digital information. When a connection is described as 100 Mbps, it means a theoretical rate of 100 million bits per second.

bps, Kbps, Mbps and Gbps

1 Kbps1,000 bps
1 Mbps1,000,000 bps
1 Gbps1,000,000,000 bps

Bits are not bytes

Network speeds usually use lowercase b for bits. File sizes and transfer speeds often use uppercase B for bytes. One byte contains eight bits, so 100 Mbps corresponds to a theoretical maximum of 12.5 MB/s.
